In Benin, the dialogue between the living and the invisible world of divinities and ancestors continues every days. Supernatural beings, moving from one universe to another, make possible this dialogue. These magical characters, which we call masks in the West, watch over and protect the living who perpetuate traditions. These ancestors express themselves through the secret society of the Egungun. These ghosts appear in colourful and sophisticated outfits for private ceremonies on the occasion of mourning or births, but also for festive demonstrations in the streets. They are magical creatures that travel from one world to another, from the realm of the dead to the earth. They return to earth at the request of those who maintain their memory. The latter then benefit from their protections and their teaching for a terrestrial course in harmony with the past and the future. Egungun worship is practiced by the Yoruba people in Benin, but also in Nigeria where it originates. This ghost cult is still very lively and sacred. The funeral ceremony, with ghosts carrying the coffin is a particularly rare event. I myself have been initiated since 2010, which allowed me to access places that are usually closed.
